Helen’s short cut for charity
A HIGHCLERE woman has donated her lockdown locks to be turned into wigs for children affected by cancer and is now raising money for charity.
Helen Mclean has spent the last year letting her hair grow well past her shoulders, ready for the big chop.
On December 2, Mrs Mclean had 12-and-a-half inches of her hair cut off, which has now been sent to children’s cancer charity The Little Princess Trust.
The charity will turn the hair into a wig for a child – a process which costs it £550.
Mrs Mclean said she was inspired to grow her hair after her friend Moira started growing her hair two years ago ahead of having it cut in March 2022 in aid of the charity.
She said: “I hadn’t thought about doing it, but a friend of mine decided to grow her hair and have it shaved off for the Little Princess Trust and she asked if I’d do it with her.
“I thought what a lovely thing to do, but never considered I could do the same.
“Then Covid hit and having not gone to the hairdresser for over a year, I realised I could keep growing mine and also donate it.
“I looked around at who does wigs and there are so few that do real hair wigs, so that’s why I decided to do it for the Little Princess Trust.
“I was just really pleased that I’d grown it long enough to donate. My daughter has long hair and she just thinks it’s for a good cause.”
Mrs Mclean has set up a Just Giving page and is hoping to raise enough to pay for the process of her hair being turned into a wig.
“The Little Princess Trust are underfunded compared to adult cancer charities so I thought I would raise money for them.
“It costs £550 to make one wig and I’d really like to raise the cost of having the wig made.
“It’s something I’d look at doing again – it doesn’t cost anything and it’s such an important cause.”
