Blues deliver another explosive performance
Newbury secure bonus-point victory to maintain their league title battle
NEWBURY Blues extended their winning run in the South West 1 East to five games as they cruised to a 50-0 victory over Frome at Monks Lane.
It took the home side 13 minutes to open the scoring through Tommy Martin.
After Blues continued to drive up the pitch, a flowing move with some quick passing from Joe Pigott, Dan Thorne, Jamie Futcher and Tom Cole saw Martin score wide out on the left.
Newbury doubled their advantage three minutes later when Harry Waye-Branch got on the end of a Thorne kick to cross the line.
Their third try of the afternoon came just before the half-hour mark when Thorne swung the ball out to Josh Winfield, who found WayeBranch and he scampered the ball over for his second.
Blues secured their try bonus point a minute before the break when they reacted well to a lineout which saw Cole power through the Frome defence to score as they opened up a 22-0 lead.
Newbury began strongly in the second half and, after managing to get their hands on a loose ball from a Frome scrum, they went on the attack.
A lineout was won by Blues
and their forwards made a lot of ground before releasing the ball to Thorne, who cut his way through the defence to score before adding the conversion for a 29-0 lead.
Things got better for the home side when they won a penalty on the back of a Frome lineout.
Jonny Lees quickly tapped
the ball and produced a fine run into the Frome 22 before offloading the ball to Will Osborne who scored and Thorne converted.
Blues didn’t take their foot off the gas in the final knockings of the game as Winfield notched in two more tries in the space of three minutes and with both being converted,
they completed a routine win.
