Newbury man taking medical items to Poland

-

A NEWBURYman is travelling solo to Poland to deliver essential medical items to Ukrainian refugees this Easter holidays.

Chris Terry will be driving alone this month in a bid to help those who are suffering medically as a result of the Russian invasion.

Mr Terry, whose day job involves driving children with learning difficulties and disabilities to and from school, will be embarking on a much longer journey.

He said: “I was watching on the TV and I saw little children down in bunkers suffering from cancer, they were saying they were desperate for medical equipment.

“It broke my heart, so I said I am going, I have made my mind up.”

He added: “I want to help in any way I can because it is getting really scary and it is getting worse.”

He has cleared out a camper van, leaving only a mattress and absolute essentials, and has filled it with medical equipment for those in need.

West Berkshire Community Hospital, which also has a donations box, has been offering up equipment and other medical and sanitary products for Mr Terry to take on his journey.

With the support of his daughters, he has also reached out to other charities and organisations who may be able to provide him with the necessary items from wheelchairs to medicine.

Embarking on this trip as a lone individual, he has had to make many big decisions, including selling his car and has now asked for any willing volunteers to financially help him with fuel costs, something he has so far been covering on his own.

He has also received help in the form of a trailer from Newbury company Air Premier Taxis, which is also collecting donations.

He has now secured a free crossing ticket from Harwich to Holland and is due to leave for his journey very soon.
