Sculpture works at Sandham
Artist Robert Fitzmaurice and sculptor and architect James Dunnett
OF Geometry and Gods, Side by Side, an exhibition by contemporary artists has opened at Sandham Memorial Chapel, Burghclere, and runs until May 1.
More than 20 new works inspired by the human figure – including stone carvings, paintings and bronze sculpture by artist Robert Fitzmaurice and sculptor and architect James Dunnett – are on show in Sandham’s intimate exhibition space and gardens. James’stone carvings involve the play of light over forms while Robert’s work includes references to cultures in both Europe and
Asia. In Oracle, Robert has painted colourful geometric shapes which come together to form a larger artwork, acrylic on aluminium.
His first large-scale bronze work – Deity – is on display in the gardens. James’ stone carvings of nudes have a clean, angular look to them, showing how the human body can be depicted by geometric shapes. Visitors are invited to compare these approaches with Stanley Spencer’s epic series of wall paintings, on permanent view in the Sandham chapel. These celebrated artworks, arguably Spencer’s greatest achievement, reflect his personal experiences during the First World War.
Of Geometry and Gods, Side by
Side exhibition is open Thursday to Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday, 11am to 3pm. Entry to the exhibition is free. There is an entry fee to view the Stanley Spencer exhibition and paintings in the chapel. National
