‘In my Easter bonnet’
Fair Close competition entries were ‘were all eggcellent!’ says judge
A NEWBURY community centre for over-65s held an Easter bonnet competition, which saw a variety of fun and vibrant entries.
Visitors at the Fair Close Centre had their bonnet creations judged by one of the trustees last Wednesday morning.
The centre holds regular craft sessions on Wednesday mornings, funded by the Corn Exchange, where Fair Close visitors had the chance to create their Easter headwear.
Margot Payne, the Fair Close trustee who judged the Easter bonnet competition, said: “It was lovely.
“It was really difficult to choose because they were all eggcellent!”
The competition took the form of the technical challenge seen on The Great British Bake Off, with Mrs Payne playing the role of Prue Leith.
The bonnets were lined up on a table and Mrs Payne judged them blind as she knew all of the people who entered well and said she didn’t want that to influence her decision.
There were prizes for the top three bonnets, with first place going to Audrey, second
place going to Ken, and third place going to Sandra.
Mrs Payne said she chose Audrey’s entry as the winning one because of its simplicity and because of how pretty it was.
All the bonnets were Easter-themed, with many incorporating chickens, little chicks, nests and daffodils
into their designs.
Mrs Payne added: “They thoroughly enjoyed making them and they all looked super when they put them on afterwards.”
All those who entered the competition received a Creme Egg, and the three winners received a larger Easter egg each.
