CAN I ask that Mr TT Weller (Newbury Weekly News, April 7) reads the science that was first proposed by Joseph Fourier in 1824, was first measured by John Tyndall in 1859 and was more fully quantified by Svante Arrhenious in 1896, which showed that carbon dioxide indeed causes warming and at a level in the atmosphere of 0.04 per cent.

This is well established science which has been checked multiple times over the last nearly 200 years, so you are not disagreeing with me but with established science.

By the way, CO2 isn’t the only major greenhouse gas – methane, water vapour and other gases contribute – but at the moment the increase in CO2 is the main driver and that gas is destabilising the environment causing increases in other greenhouse gases.

The term ‘greenhouse’ was first used in this context by Nils Gustaf Ekholm, a Swedish meteorologist, in 1901, so even that term in not new. Your fuel bills are not rising by

42 per cent because of any climate factors or policies, but simply because the world price of oil and gas has risen due to a number of factors, including the Covid pandemic and the war in Ukraine.

If we had more wind and solar generation your electricity price would go down as electricity from that source is far cheaper than from any other source.

I suggested the Citroën Ami as most people only drive with one person in the car and sometimes two, the range is more than the average journey distance per day and the average speed of traffic is just under 30mph so the Ami is perfectly adequate for most people.

Most people’s cars are there to boost their ego rather than provide a relevant means of transport so most people could get around in a significantly smaller car than they do which would go a long way towards saving the human race – the planet will look after itself.

I am not sorry if I have offended anyone by saying this.

I do wish that people would acquaint themselves with reality of things before spouting ignorant personal beliefs on your pages.
