Claire starts in style

TEAM Kennet finished third in their first Wessex League match of the season at Swindon.

A thrilling match saw TK place fourth, but adjusted officials scoring saw them move up to third.

Swindon won the match with 479 points, ahead of Waverley (413.5), Slough (359.5), Team Kennet (320), Portsmouth (277) and Dorchester (76).

The under-15 girls, defending their age group title from last year, started with a good second place.

Claire McGonnell and Bethany Maclean teamed up in the javelin for a double victory, McGonnell throwing a UK Grade 1 distance of 26.53m.

Zoe Allen added another win in the shot with 9.92m, with Suki Humphreys taking third B (6.18m).

In the discus two second places came from Humphreys (20.37) and Maclean (15.0), and there was another double triumph in the high jump through Neve Wright and Mia Wright, both clearing 1.40m.

On the track, Allen came third in the 75m hurdles (14.1), Maclean was third in the A 800m with 2.42 and Leilah Gaye came second in the B string (2.55).

The 4x100m relay team of Lunn, Allen, Maclean and McGonnell placed second in 56.0.

The under-17 men also came second on the day, with most of the points picked up in field events.

George Down leapt 6.35m for victory in the long jump, while Brandon Carter won the javelin with 43.15.

Seb Simpson won the discus with a throw of 30.93 and was second in the A string shot, with Carter winning the B string (8.27).

In the high jump another win came from Euan Avery with 1.63m.

The 100m saw another double win from George Down (11.6) and Euan Avery (12.2).

The under-13 boys took third place, Harry Fenner winning the discus (17m) and a superb double win came in the javelin through Will McDonald (31.42) and Fenner (28.27).

The under-15 boys were fifth overall, James Fenner winning the javelin with 39.49m.

And the under-17 women were fifth, Eve Brown just being pipped on the line in the 800m for second in 2.30.7.

Team Kennet Quadkids were also in action for their opening Wessex League match at Swindon on Sunday.

A young team turned out for this match with most of the athletes from the club in school Year 4.

They produced some great results and set up a good two years in front of them in the same age group.

Swindon again won the match with 1,621 points, ahead of Portsmouth (1,420), Team Kennet (1,243), Slough (1,199), Waverley (1,087), Havant/SETAFA (883) and Dorchester (773).

TK’s boys section were third, with Malik Gaye finishing 10th overall with 203pts.

Malik’s best event was the 600m where he clocked 2.02.7 and he also ran 12.0 in the 75m, and leapt 3.08m in the long jump.

Euan Jones scored 177pts with his best event being 600m in 2.08.7 and throwing the Vortex 23.79m – the best throw from a TK athlete on the day.

The girls came fourth overall with newcomer Quinn Joyce the top TK scorer with 141pts.

Her best event was 600m (2.22.6), just behind was Penelope Lyth (2.22.1).
