-

PUPILS in West Berkshire achieved higher GCSE grades in English and mathematics than the national average this year as formal summer exams returned after the pandemic disruption.

Indicative results show 74.7 per cent of West Berkshire pupils achieved grades 4 or above for both English and maths GCSE, with 54.5 per cent achieving grades 5 or above.

Individually, for English, 84.5 per cent achieved grade 4 or above, against an England average of 77.2 per cent.

In maths, 78 per cent achieved grade 4 or above, against an England average of 75.1 per cent.

West Berkshire Council executive member for education, children and young people Dominic Boeck said: “The last two years have seen students deal with a different form of pressure, studying for important exams due to the pandemic, home schooling and learning online.

“We can congratulate our students, not only on their results, but for the incredible resilience they’ve shown during this extraordinarily difficult time. We wish them well as they take their next steps.”
