Lawrences Lane restrictions
LAWRENCES Lane in Thatcham may become a no-car zone subject to the result of a public consultation.
West Berkshire Council is running a statutory sixmonth consultation on the implementation of the no motor vehicles restriction on this road.
The district council said Lawrences Lane has been identified as a “suitable site” to trial this restriction.
It is hoped that such an order will create a pleasant route for walkers, cyclists and equestrians between Cold Ash and Thatcham.
It is also to improve recreational access to the countryside and encourage active travel overall.
The restriction came into force on July 19 with the provision of signs, but there is intention to install removable bollards.
Access to properties directly adjoining Lawrences Lane is unrestricted, but only available from one direction.
In order to achieve this, the restriction is in place between the south side of access to Park Farm and a point approximately 200m north of Lawrence’s Lane with advance signage at the Lawrences Lane cul de sac and Broad Lane junctions.
Access is permitted for relevant people to remove obstructions for the highway, to maintain, improve or reconstruct the carriageway or adjacent land, to lay, alter or maintain any utility repairs and for emergency vehicles.
A comment form has been produced for public views on the scheme which can be found on the West Berkshire Council website and should be handed to the council’s traffic and road safety team.
The closing date for comments and objections is January 19.
All comments will be considered and a decision will be made by an individual executive member in March of next year as to whether the restriction will be made permanent.
