The guitar player’s guitar player

Double Grammy Award-winner Albert Lee on tour

-

ALBERT Lee, one of the world’s finest guitar players, needs no introduction to country music and rock fans, but what may be less well-known is his local connection.

He toured with the multi-talented band Hogan’s Heroes for many years featuring some of the top musicians in the UK.

It was formed by its namesake, studio and gigging musician Gerry Hogan (pedal steel guitar/dobro/guitar – the founder of Newbury’s Hogan Music – 35 years ago, specifically to back Albert Lee.

The band’s first gig took place in 1987 at Gerry’s annual Newbury festival for pedal steel guitar.

They played together on a regular basis and as a result became one of the tightest units in music.

A double Grammy Award-winner, Albert will be returning to Basingstoke Haymarket with his current band on Sunday, September 25.

Albert is one of the most respected guitarists, known for his speed of playing and his technical virtuosity, yet is one of the most melodic musicians.

The British-born country-rock artist started his career during the emerging rock ‘n’ roll scene of 60s London, when he swapped bands with the likes of Jimmy Page and Chris Farlowe, before moving to the US. He soon became the guitar player’s guitar player.

Also an accomplished piano player and a fine singer, he has a soulful voice but can equally ‘tear it up’ rock ‘n’ roll style. Co-writer of the defining Country Boy, and writer of many other great songs, he has played on countless sessions worldwide.

He has appeared and recorded with many fantastic artistes in the music industry including Glen Campbell, Dave Edmunds, Dolly Parton, Bobby Bare, Joan Armatrading, Joe Cocker, Willie Nelson, and Linda Ronstadt. He was a member of The Everly Brothers Band, Emmylou Harris’ Hotband and Bill Wymans Rhythm Kings.

In 2002, Albert was among other world-class names appearing at the Royal Albert Hall in the Concert for George tribute to George Harrison and has appeared at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Festival in Dallas four times.

He duetted with Emmylou Harris, Peter Asher and Allison Moorer at a tribute concert honouring The Everly Brothers at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.

He was awarded a trailblazer award by the Americana Society of the UK in 2017.
