Savage plays starring role as sides draw in thriller

HOP-SON drew 10-10 with The Big Threes in only the second tie of the Newbury Summer League season.

Simon Sonsino beat Ray Beeks

3-0 and lost a very close match 1-3 against player-of-the-match Jack Savage, 8-11, 11-9, 10-12, 9-11.

Sue Purton lost in five against

Jack Savage and lost 1-3 against

Ray Beeks, while Hop-Son won the doubles 3-1.

Woolton Hill Irons beating The Pilgrims 13-8, with Ian Langley losing 1-3 to Tom Watmore and beating Beverley Moore 3-1.

Star player Antony Baker beat Beverley Moore 3-0 and in the signature match and then edged out Tom Watmore in five winning 8-11, 13-11, 11-8, 15-17, 11-6.

In the doubles, Irons lost the first two matches and then won the next three 13-11, 13-11, 11-9.

Thatcham Scorpions lost 13-4 against Thatcham Spiders.

Duncan Groves beat Eric van

Looy 3-1 and lost 0-3 to player-ofthe-match Lee Calcutt, while Niall McGrane lost 0-3 to Calcutt and lost 1-3 to Van Looy.

Scorpions lost the doubles 0-3. In Division 2, Thatcham Cyclones blew past Thatcham Wrens 15-2. Dan O’Neill beat Toby Atkins 3-0 and won a pulsating match against Mary Cherowbrie­r10-12, 11-3, 12-10, 9-11, 11-4.

Player-of-the-match Andy Jeffery, beat Cherowbrie­r and Atkins 3-0 and Cyclones took the doubles 3-0. Woolton Hill Idles are cruising towards the Division 1 title with 91 points from seven games.

The contest for second place is intensifyi­ng with Thatcham Spiders on 79 points and Woolton Hill

Irons on 78 points, both from seven games, and Nets ‘n’ Edges on 68 points from six games.

Unbeaten Thatcham Cyclones have opened up a significan­t lead at the top of Division 2, with 94 points from seven games.

Thatcham Lions are in second with 69 points and Thatcham Dragons third with 65 points from six games.

Thatcham Stormz could still be in the mix with 33 points from only three games.

Jonathan Hopson is taking on all-comers in a 12-hour charity fundraisin­g event on Saturday, September 10 (8am-8pm) at the Fair Close Centre in Newbury.
