Walters and Wehrle clinch salver

-

THERE was a host of fierce competition at Newbury and Crookham Golf Club over the weekend as players battled to win the Boynton Salvers.

The format of the competition was set as greensomes bogey, not unlike foursomes, the difference being that both players in a team hit a tee shot.

The Men’s Salver was won by Adam Walters and Tim Wehrle, who finished their round seven up and three strokes clear of runners-up Jeremy Hardwick and Robert Urwin.

Jo Grieve and Karen Smith claimed the Ladies’ Salver title, finishing one down and a shot clear of the second-placed pairing of Anna Mrowiec and Kerry Barlow.

Meanwhile, the men’s team won a thrilling match in the quarter-final of the Annodata Matchplay knockout competition, hosting a team from Market Harborough.

After wins from Paul Hutchings and Ashley May as well as a valuable half point from Philip Piper, the sides

finished level with the scores 2½-2½.

That meant that the final match, involving Newbury and Crookham’s Ross Wilson, went to a sudden death play-off hole.

Wilson kept his nerve to make a fine par, which was enough to win the match and send his side through to the semi-finals, one win away from a potential final in Portugal.

Players also braved wet conditions to take part in the club’s annual President’s Day.

Those that faced the weather were soon rewarded with some late-morning sunshine

and excellent course conditions.

It was especially worthwhile for the eventual winners Jimmy Farrell and Ben Rhymes, who scored 55 points, finishing ahead of second-placed Paul Sherman and Brendon Stock and third-placed duo Colin Sturgess and James Foster.

Husband-and-wife team John and Carol Thorogood were the best mixed team with 49 points, while Leighton Kearins won the nearest-to-the-pin prize and Ken Kenyon and Steve Myers shot the best score on the par threes.
