MP’s support for ‘jewel of a theatre’
Visit to Watermill after shock withdrawal of funding
NEWBURY MP Laura Farris visited The Watermill last week to express her support for theatre following the shock announcement that Arts Council England have withdrawn its annual funding.
During her visit on Thursday she said: “I am extremely disappointed that Arts Council England has refused funding to this local jewel of a theatre, despite its exceptional creative offering and value to our local community.
“I’ve been working closely with Michelle Donelan [Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport] and am hoping in the coming days we can ask them to urgently reconsider their priorities and recognise that rural theatres of this quality are exceptionally rare and just as deserving as theatres in the North of England.”
The Bagnor theatre has launched a new fundraising campaign – THRIVE.
Individuals wanting to take action can donate from as little £1 to show their support and ensure that the work of The Watermill, and everyone who is part of its community, can continue to thrive.
There is also the option of becoming a Friend of The Watermill, for as little as £30 per year.
The 200-seat ‘regional powerhouse’ has a reputation for producing bold, world-class theatre with local and national reach.
It also has an extensive programme of community outreach and schools touring work, and a firm commitment to diversity, education and talent development.
In the wake of the announcement
... rural theatres of this quality are exceptionally rare and just as deserving as theatres in the North of England
there has been an outpouring of support with countless messages expressing how The Watermill has changed lives through its work on and off stage – from audiences who delight in the work on stage, artists whose careers have been launched by its talent development programme and communities whose lives are enriched by its extensive outreach programme.
People wanting to show their support can donate online (www.watermill.org.uk/ donate_now) or by calling the box office on (01635) 46044.
