Ellie’s one to watch so catch her at Har well
CELEBRATING the debut album Dwelling by the Weir,
Ellie Gowers plays the thriving intimate venue of Harwell
Village Hall on Saturday night, the latest Big Ginger Tom music promotion.
BBC Introducing describes her work as ‘beautiful new songs… quality stuff’.
Belonging, love and loss, nostalgia and home are themes embedded into Ellie’s album. Taken from the old Saxon meaning of Ellie’s hometown Warwick, Dwelling by the Weir is a collection of songs inspired by the rich history that Warwickshire offers.
When 2020 restricted us to the confines of our homes and daily walks were a part of our regime, Ellie took the opportunity to unearth all that was around her.
This natural human fascination of understanding how our home came
to be was met with an urge to capture stories and tales of people who had lived and existed in the area.
From equine self-pity to women navigating the waterways, ecological devastation to communities persevering and coming together, Ellie travelled to the sleepiest of hamlets and the busiest of market towns to paint a balanced picture of the county she had grown up in.
Ellie is a songwriter and guitarist. What grew from a childhood love of literature and traditional folk song is a carefully crafted and emotionally mature catalogue of original material, referencing artists such as Joni Mitchell, Nick Drake and Laura Marling.
Her songs are at times sensitive and tender, but not without the fiery and darker discourse that have labelled Ellie as dynamic and one to watch. After a trio tour earlier in the year, audiences will have the chance to hear her songs completely stripped down to just Ellie and her guitar. Special guest will be Malcom MacWatt.
