NEWBURY Cancer Care (NCC) is celebrating 40 years of providing vital services to West Berkshire.

Established in 1984 by local GP Paul Millard, the charity provides support to people with cancer and their families.

It developed the Rainbow Rooms and more recently organised The Rosemary Appeal at West Berkshire Community Hospital (WBCH).

It has no plans to stop its work in the community, which includes a free transport service for cancer patients.

This year will see the start of the Butterfly Rooms project at WBCH.

The chairman of NCC Dave Ormrod explained: “We are very excited by our current vision and plans.

“In line with our charity objectives, we will also be running an educational seminar for medical professionals and support staff featuring nationally renowned speakers at Donnington Valley Hotel on

June 11.”

Working closely with the Cancer Centre at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading, the charity is also undertaking a project to double the number of chemotherapy treatments in the Rosemary Centre and has offered financial support

for additional staff.

It further plans to install patio doors in eight of the Donnington Ward side rooms leading into a new garden area.

Cancer patients will soon benefit from new clinics in the Rosemary Centre.

Joint oncology and palliative care services are being developed to complement the existing patient support and palliative care services, providing a less stressful and more convenient treatment regime.

Mr Ormrod added: “I am sure you will join me in agreeing these are fitting projects to celebrate 40 years.

“We couldn’t do what we do without the amazing community support we receive from fundraisers, legacy gifts and local charitable trusts.

“We have some funding in place for these projects but additional funds will be needed, so please look out for project updates and fundraising appeals coming soon.”
