Kevin and Andy team up for Clama Trophy triumph

CLUB president Kevin Hopwood partnered Andy Grayson to victory in the Clama Trophy, the first men’s board competitio­n of the year at West Berkshire.

They scored 40 points in the greensome stableford competitio­n that was keenly contested with the top 11 teams of the 41 pairs entered within four points of the winners. Tony Atkins and Mark Charlton scored 39 points to beat Andy’s son, Charles Grayson, and John Harris on countback to claim second spot.

There were 24 entrants in the Wednesday nine-hole qualifier for the Liddiard Cup with three reaching the qualifying standard of 19 points.

Steve Salter with 20 points won, beating Chris Harris on countback, followed by Aaron Rid with 19.

Paula Corfield scored 34 points to win the ladies’ Saturday stableford.

Jane Brackenbur­y was second with 29, while Sian Soanes was a point further back in third spot.

Charlie Overton, with 41 points, won the men’s stableford. Kevin Hopwood was second with 40, while Tony Atkins, with 36, beat Stuart Harrison on countback to take third place. Both the pairings contesting the Daily Mail Foursomes won their way through to the third round at the weekend.

Gale McAuley and Paula Corfield entertaine­d Broome Manor in a close match that was all square after 16 before they won the last two holes to win two-up.

In the men’s competitio­n, Christy Whelehan and Chris Prior also had to fight to the end away to Newbury and Crookham.

They were two holes down with three to play, but won the last three holes to win one-up.

The seniors’ team in the M4 Seniors Winter League won their round of 16 match at home to Studley Wood by 3½-½ to qualify for the last eight. West Berks 1 visited Tadmarton Heath in their first match of the season in Division 1 of the Central

Sevens Golf League where they put up a strong away performanc­e before losing 4-3.

West Berks 2 team that last year won Division 3 and the league knockout cup, kicked off their season with a 2½-½ home victory over Chiltern Forest Kites.

West Berks 2 were presented with last season trophy at the league’s presentati­on day at Kirtlingto­n GC. It was a big day for the club and in particular team captain Kevin Howe, as he collected the awards.

He said: “My thanks go to everybody who has contribute­d to this very successful season. I am so proud to be captain of this great team effort.”
