Darren pips Darren to scoop May Medal at West Berks

DARRENS were to the fore in Division 1 of the men’s May medal at West Berkshire Golf Club.

Darren Morton, with gross 80, net 73, took first place, while Darren Boulton shot 83, net 74, to claim second.

Andy Grayson was third with gross 86, net 76.

Stuart Harrison with gross 83, net 70, won Division 2, beating Chris Prior gross 83, on countback, while Tony Atkins gross 86, net 71, was third.

In Division 3 Charles Grayson – Andy’s son – won Division 3 with gross 96, and net 69, the best net score of the day.

Dan Hawkins was second on gross 99, net 71, beating Martin Drew, gross 91, on countback.

John Harris scored a fine 40 points to win the men’s midweek stableford.

John Loader was second on 36, while Andy Grayson, enjoying a busy week, was a further three points back in third place.

Meanwhile, Paul Beake scored 37 points to win the men’s Saturday stableford.

Robin Bailey was second with 36 and Dan Hawkins and Peter Cumpsty both scored 33 and finished in that order on countback.

Sian Soanes won the ladies’ Saturday medal with gross 106, net 74.

Jane Brackenbur­y was second with gross 89, net 78, while Tina Mulford with gross 101, net 79, was third.

The team comprising Tina Mulford, Babs Collyer and Ann Brown won a ladies’ Texas Scramble with a score of 64.

Georgie Seaman, Carol Sparvell and Helen Bell were second with 72 and Sandy Miller, Jane Wilmore and Simone Diamond third with 76.

There were just two qualifiers for the final at the end of July in the ninehole Liddiard qualifier competitio­n on Wednesday.

Nick Jones and Paul Barton both scored the requisite 19 points with Jones winning on countback.

It was a busy and highly successful week for the club in team events.

In the Central Sevens Golf League, West Berks 1 had a 6-1 win in Division 1 against Cherwell Edge, while West Berks 2 won 3-0 against the Defence Academy in the second round of the league knockout trophy in defence of the trophy they won last year.

The men’s team won 4½-1½ at The Springs, the seniors won 4-2 at home to Mill Ride, the mixed team entertaine­d Newbury & Crookham and won 5½-2½ while the Vets team enjoyed a hardwon half at Test Valley.
