On No­vem­ber 9—11 months be­fore Ger­many would be re­uni­fied af­ter 45 years—cit­i­zens be­gan to de­mol­ish the Ber­lin Wall piece by piece. The ju­bi­la­tion was like “Christ­mas, New Year’s Eve and Easter rolled into one,” a ra­dio sta­tion re­ported. It would take an­other two years for the Cold War to end, with the dis­so­lu­tion of the Soviet Union in 1991.
