Flying dairy trade as livestock market attracts busy ring

A PACKED ring of local and national buyers ensured a flying dairy trade at Holsworthy Livestock Market.

Bidders from across the South West and further afield, including Cheshire and Shropshire, had the choice of a wide variety of types at the Kivells sale on Wednesday, March 6, with a total of 139 forward.

Topping the day at £2,500 was a superb second-calving cow, Thuborough Daisey 651 SP, yielding 42kgs and sold on behalf of Thuborough Farms of Sutcombe. This was closely followed by Messrs TN & M Morrow of Truro who sold a second calver, ‘Maymor Duplo Jenny 3 GP84,’ at £2,450 and another second calver, ‘Maymor Silvio Faith,’ at £2,400.

Other pedigree fresh calved cows from Messrs Morrow realised £2,200 and £2,150, with their consignmen­t averaging a very impressive £2,300.

Older cows also saw great demand with Mr MJ Sanderock of Launceston selling a seventh calver yielding 39kgs at £1,520. Freshly calved cows averaged £2,051.

Freshly calved heifers saw a roaring trade, topping at £2,400 for ‘Wilsey Grace 96’ on behalf of Les & Heather French of Launceston. George and Nick Hill of Lamerton sold a fantastic heifer yielding 38kgs at £2,400, with another fresh heifer from the Hill family realising £2,100 and their consignmen­t averaging £2,063.

Regular vendors Messrs SR Gilbert & Son of Sheepwash topped at £2,100 for ‘Bocaddon Mauney Aj Less,’ and Graham and Grace Dart of Holsworthy continued their dispersal with a best price of £2,100.

James Hale of the Hale Farming Partnershi­p, Holsworthy, sold a consignmen­t of autumncalv­ing, grazing type cows to £1,720 for a January-calved second calver, with a December-calved Jersey cross cow realising £1,700.

The in-calf heifers saw an excellent trade, topping at £1,800 for a heifer due April onwards from Roy, Sue and Benjamin Griffin of Willsworth­y, Whitstone. The same vendors also sold heifers to £1,680, £1,650 and £1,620.

The Gear Family of Barnstaple sold a consignmen­t of British Friesian in-calf heifers, due April-May, to a very strong trade. Prices raced away to a high of £1,720 with the consignmen­t averaging £1,663.
