AH, Bideford, the little white town! Then it became the little green town and now we are going all out for the ‘blue’ economy.

I was a little startled to read that! Surely, not…? But no, the blue economy is what we’ve got used to referring to as Clean Maritime – everything from seaweed farming to wave power. So, now Bideford is to become a little blue town as well – aquamarine, maybe?

A vintage photo posted on the Bideford History page reminded us of what was perhaps the grey economy – a herd of elephants trooping over Bideford long bridge in 1961.

It was wonderful to read the comments of people who remembered what must have been a sensational occasion, with people lining the bridge to watch. One person remembered her mother opening the door to pick up the milk bottles (those were the days!) and hearing a shuffling sound which turned out to be the elephants passing. Apparently, they arrived by train as part of Chipperfield’s Circus.

A bit too early for Bideford Zoo, which didn’t open till 1966. And it would be hard to blame them for the collapse of the bridge which didn’t happen until 1968.

Talking of the railway, not everyone is happy that proposals to create three holiday units out of the old station building have been approved by the planning committee. However, the applicants worked closely with Torridge to ensure they were acceptable to conservation officers and the way is now open for improvements to the heritage site, which were part of the proposal.

These include a canopy over the steps going up to the site, a mini museum providing audio memories of East the Water – in a phone box which will be relocated there – and improved facilities for volunteers working in the heritage centre. Neither the Tarka Trail nor the potential to reinstate a heritage railway will be affected.

More flooding on the quay was captured in some surreal photos this week. It was unclear for a moment whether the Lundy office was floating out to sea, or the Severn Scimitar was planning to dock somewhere up the High Street.

However, things returned to normal when the tide went out, though once again it’s another warning that more needs to be done to protect coastal communities such as our own from extreme weather events which are becoming more frequent.
