IT is good to see that Bideford’s Regeneration Board wants to see ‘the built and cultural heritage of the town well cared for and celebrated.’

Our venerable history has left us with a fine array of historic buildings, including many – possibly most – buildings in the town centre which are Grade II listed.

But it has also left us with a conundrum: how to maintain and repurpose these historic structures once time has made their original purpose redundant?

The wonderful Victorian Pannier Market is a case in point. It is good to see the aspiration to run more events there but it’s an uphill struggle (literally!) to get it to work.

Meanwhile, we hear that the old library is to host a gym – at least temporarily until Torridge council can raise the millions needed for complete renovation.

The trouble with these old buildings is that, after years of neglect or only patchy repairs, many are now leaky and rotting.

Scaffolding going up raises expectations that something is about to happen. But that around the old Specsavers building in High Street has been up for getting on for two years, and the grand Bridge Buildings, once the council offices, has similarly been enclosed by metal poles for some time now, with no sign of work in progress.

Apart from the obstruction to the pavement, it would be good to be able to appreciate the ‘Renaissance-style’ building once again.

An old building still being used for its original purposes, the Kings Arms, has also sprouted scaffolding in the last few weeks, and a lot of work going on there to spruce up the place for summer.

Now we hear that there are plans afoot to purchase the Methodist Church at the top of High Street. The building, dating from the early 20th century in ‘Gothic Arts and Crafts’ style, is certainly a gem to be preserved.

The centre of Bideford could do with some more community space, and we have far more heritage stories and artifacts than can be displayed in the Burton’s first floor museum. But given that Torridge council has recently sold Bridge Buildings and given the old cattle market site to the rugby club, let’s not kid ourselves that it will be cheap or easy to repurpose yet another rambling old building.
