War memory honoured by poppy collection record

-

THE Cadets of 418 (Aberconwy) Squadron ATC have broken their own record for a street collection for the Royal British Legion.

Cadets aged between 12 and 18 manned the streets over two weekends to sell Poppies to the people of Llandudno.

In this centenary year marking the start of the Great War, the Cadets set themselves the challenge of beating last years record of £3600 and they would like to thank the people of Llandudno for their generosity towards such an important charity.

The Cadet who collected the most in the year’s street collection for the Air Training Corps was Cadet Corporal, George Mayne who collected another record £567.14.

Cpl Mayne, who visited the Somme battlefields in July said “The Squadron’s visit to the Somme in July, was so, so important to us this year. We really wanted to raise more for the Poppy Appeal and thank you to everyone who supported us.”

Squadron Commander, Flight Lieutenant, Vince Morris added “These young people are amazing, they set themselves the task of honouring the memory of the fallen of 100 years ago by raising as much as possible. However the Poppy Appeal isn’t just about the past and our own service instructor completed a tour of duty in Afghanistan this year. We must remember the living as well as honouring the dead. Thank you to everyone for this amazing success.”

Aberconwy Squadron parades twice weekly, Monday and Thursday evenings 7pm to 9pm. The Air Training Corps is a Youth Organisation which is open to young people of both sexes aged between 13 and 18.
