Village community celebrates new hub

A“GARETHMalonestyle” community choir could soon be established as part of Deganwy’s new community hub.

Following the closure of the library due to a falling number of users, Cllr Julie Fallon fought for the premises to be saved for community use.

Conwy County Council had wanted to sell it to raise money to fund the new library and archive earmarked for Conwy.

Clle Fallon’s plan was backed by Conwy Town Council, Cllr Samantha Cotton, North Wales Police, youth clubs and the i61 Church, and the lease was granted.

Last week an open day was held at the hub for residents to see plans and for them to give ideas to the volunteers running it, as to what they’d like to see come to fruition.

A WREN grant to the tune of £75,000 is being applied for in the coming weeks, and the group will hear in June whether they are successful.

“The day was a brilliant success with well over 50 people attending,” said Julie.

“There were people of all ages coming in from youngsters to families and pensioners.

“You never know how this sort of thing is going to pan out and we were a bit concerned to only have a couple of people coming through the doors so are delighted by the response.

“There were loads of suggestions made on the day including setting up a community choir, which was made by a man who has experience with that kind of thing, to painting classes, men’s groups, youth groups and so much more.

“We also had lots of offers of volunteering, I couldn’t be happier.”
