Appeal to help raise funds to restore torched scout hut
ASCOUT troop which lost its hut when it was torched in an arson attack is appealing for help to raise tens of thousands of pounds to replace it.
The 46-year-old hut in Conwy was burnt down in the early hours of the morning in May 20, 2012, leaving 90 Scouts, Beavers and Cubs without a permanent home.
Campaigners have already raised £20,000 towards the cost of a new hut, but are now looking for experts who can help them apply for grants to rebuild - at least £100,000.
Spokesman James Astrop said: “Conwy Scout hut was destroyed by arson three years ago this coming May. We have so far managed to raise £20,000 towards rebuilding this facility.
“We wish to engage with the local community to raise awareness of our appeal, as well as trying to get assistance applying for the various grants available to help us in our cause.”
On Tuesday night, dozens of supporters attended an open evening and cake sale in aid of the campaign at the Scouts’ temporary home in Bodlondeb Youth Centre in Bangor Road in Conwy.
After the meeting, Mr Astrop said: “It was very successful. We now have a group of mainly parents of who will identify grants and help with grant applications.”
Also on Tuesday Crest Co-operative gave the Scouts a cheque in payment for the several tonnes of old clothing and fabric which Scouts collected as part of their appeal.
Local organisations and businesses have helped the troop with donations since the fire. Donations are still needed.
