Nant face visit to Skewen in last eight

-

NANT Conwy will look to build on their seven-point lead at the Division One North peak this Saturday when they host old rivals Caernarfon.

The Conwy Valley side could not be in better shape to take on the Cofis having progressed to the Swalec Plate quarterfinals last Saturday with a superb 47-12 win in South Wales at Pontypool United.

Nant will visit Pwllheli’s conquerors Skewen in the last eight on March 28.

The Division One North table-toppers had their tie at Ponty wrapped up by half time, at which point they had established a 34-5 lead.

Fly-half Sion Pringle opened the scoring after five minutes when he picked the ball up from the base of a driving maul and scored a try for centre Delwyn Jones to convert.

Jones extended the lead with a penalty after 10 minutes.

The home team, joint leaders of Division Two East, replied with a pick-up and drive unconverted try.

After 15 minutes, all Nant’s back-line were involved in a passing movement that ended with left-wing Jack Moriarty scoring a converted try.

Pringle then intercepted a pass on his own 22 and sprinted the length of the pitch to score a try underneath the posts with Jones again converting.

In the 22nd minute Nant scored their next points.

Right-wing Steffan Horan charged down a defensive kick, got hold of the ball and scored a try in the corner.

Pringle scored his third try after 28 minutes when he won the ball on the halfway line and outran the entire defence to touch down in the corner again.

Ten minutes into the second half, centre Aeron Jones chipped the ball over the defensive line, gathered the bouncing ball and ran in for a try.

Pontypool United replied with a converted try after 15 minutes – a few minutes before one of their players was red carded for dangerous play.

Things quietened down after this but Delwyn Jones scored a drop goal after 25 minutes.

Emrys Evans, the replacement centre and a highly experienced player, showed his strength and nous five minutes before the end when he powered over through some weak tackling to touch down for Nant’s seventh try.
