According to Conwy council, the previous tenant had left the property in a deplorable state and the odour was causing other residents problems.

The council prohibited anyone from living at the flat and ordered Burton to clean up, but he failed to comply and was prosecuted.

Cllr Philip Evans, Conwy’s cabinet member for regulatory services, said: “It is unacceptable that any premises should be allowed to get into such a condition that it adversely impacts on others.

Doug’s family were going to take his ashes to Scotland with them, but were so touched by the community’s response to their son’s death that they decided his ashes should be scattered on the banks of the Conwy River instead.

They were scattered opposite his beloved Tannery restaurant, which he ran with Garry.

Garry said: “Doug loved the view from the Tannery, and in the spring we are going to plant a couple of lime trees in his memory.

“I travelled to Scotland last week to attend the funeral of his grandmother and I will always keep in touch with his family.

“A real comfort to me is visiting Doug’s father and brother. I go every week and it helps.”

Asked what he misses most about his two friends, Garry said: “Doug’s sense of humour and his decency. He was a gentleman.

“Bernie had his whole life ahead of him. He was in such a good place at the time of his death. His dad says I gave him 18 months of happiness, but that’s not really enough is it?”
