Man raped teen after drink was ‘spiked’

-

“She was completely at your mercy, totally disorientated and as vulnerable as she could possibly be,” he said the judge.

Calvert pushed her away towards a wall and raped her.

When she got home her family described her as unresponsive and repeatedly being ill and unable to speak. Unfortunately, samples had not been taken and there was no forensic evidence available about the presence or otherwise of a date rape drug.

Both women said the drink had a dramatic effect on them, the like of which they had never experienced before. “I am quite satisfied that both women were badly affected by something they had been given in the flat. As to what it was, or who was responsible for giving it to them, I cannot say,” said the judge.

At that time of the rape in November 2012, Calvert, the judge said, was arrogant, wholly self-centred, a show-off. “You did not care at all for the feelings of your victim,” he told him. “The sentence will give you plenty of time to reflect on your behaviour.”

Calvert was said to spend up to £2,000 a month on drugs and could afford it because of an inheritance and his income as a pub manager.

After the case, Detective Inspector Sion Williams welcomed the sentence and hoped it could act as a catalyst for the victim to help start rebuild her life.
