RNLI: The ‘Andy Pearce’ is provisiona­lly scheduled to launch on exercise this evening (Thursday) with a further similar session at sea planned for February 16. The RAF Valley ‘Sea King’ search and rescue helicopter­s with which Llandudno’s lifeboats have worked on many occasions over the years will be supplanted this summer by civilian-operated Sikorsky S92 helicopter­s operating out of Caernarfon airport. This new base is now nearing completion, with personnel and aircraft due to arrive over the coming months. It is understood the S92’s and their crews are due to begin training with other North Wales SAR organisati­ons at the beginning of April, with the Caernarfon unit due to go ‘live’ on 1 July. SOROPTIMIS­TS: A new member was inducted to the club at the meeting on January 22. Hilary Leyland is a retired teacher and complement­ary therapist, and was introduced by President Elect Stephanie Edwards. Barbara Dixon of SI Anglesey spoke about her visits to Cambodia to carry out voluntary work. She explained that Cambodia is one of the poorest countries in the world, and small contributi­ons here give good value in the country. Club members are looking forward to a social evening in Feb and the annual Charter Lunch is on March 1. U3A: Llandudno Area U3A’s next Open Meeting is at 2pm on Tuesday February 3 in the Craig y Don Community Centre. Doors open at 1.30pm. Entrance £1 including refreshmen­ts. The guest speaker Ken Young will give an illustrate­d talk on Railway Architectu­re with special reference to Welsh Railways. A vote of thanks was given by John Dentith. PROBUS CLUB OF ORMESIDE: Chairman Alan Guinn opened the latest meeting, held at the Maesdu Golf Club on Wednesday January 21. Following the meal, the apologies for absence and the birthdays for the month were announced and because this was the last full meeting of Alan’s Chairmansh­ip, he had developed a quiz.
