Rachel makes flying start to
CONWY Valley sprinter Rachel Johncock kicked off 2015 with a personal best performance for Team GB last weekend.
Johncock promised there is more to come from her this season after running a PB in the 60m at the Sainsbury’s Glasgow International Match on Saturday.
The 21-year-old celebrated her first return to Glasgow since running the 100m in last year’s Commonwealth Games by clocking a lifetime best 7.34secs – finishing second just 0.07secs behind Germany’s Verena Sailer.
Johncock, from Dolwyddelan, is aiming for February’s British Indoor Championships in Sheffield and hopes her performance will provide a solid platform as she looks to this summer’s European U23 Championships in Tallinn and the senior World Championships in Beijing.
The former Colwyn Bay athlete said of her PB: “It’s my first race of the season so to come out with a PB is great.
“The field was great and the audience was amazing. There are quite a few things I still need to work on but that will come with races.
“We know we’ve been running quick times but training and competing are totally different things. Whether you can execute in a race is totally different to training. I’m pleased I’ve been able to do that but I’ve still got a lot of things to work on.
“I made the final last year of the British Indoor Championships, and I’ve obviously opened up with a PB here, so a medal in that would be great.
“The World Championships might be for the relay but it all depends on selection.”
