Williams strikes late to secure that all-important Bay bonus score

-

CENTRE Gaz Williams crossed in the final seconds to secure a vital winning bonus point for Colwyn Bay in last Saturday’s 22-6 Division Two North triumph at Rhyl.

In a tough encounter at The Waen, it looked like the visitors might not get the much-sought-after extra point, but in a game where numerous opportunities had gone begging for the Bay, Williams was the benefactor of an excellent take-and-give from brother Tom, who had benefited from fly-half Pat Atkinson’s great play under pressure.

Williams still had much to do but had the pace and composure to round the defence and finish well to allow Atkinson the conversion.

Bay captain Ben Evans did well to score the first try on six minutes, squeezing over in the corner with the close attentions of three defenders.

Rhyl converted a penalty 11 minutes later and the Bay’s next points did not come until just before the break, Atkinson crossing.

The second half started with another three-pointer for Rhyl and at 6-10 things were looking at little too close for comfort for Bay.

Rhyl saw a chance of victory and picked up the pace , but the Bay’s hard-working defence again stood firm.

Eventually, Colwyn managed to get into some better territorial positions.

An attacking scrum allowed No8 Evans to pick up and feed Barry Cravetto on the blind side.

The scrum-half attacked the line to squeeze between two defenders cross for the visitors’ third try.

The fourth and all-important bonus point try proved hard to come by until that late touchdown.

Colwyn Bay travel to Machynlleth this Saturday for a league tussle.
