Nant hoping to boost their lead at peak

-

NANT Conwy hope to extend their lead at the Division One North summit when they entertain lowly Dolgellau at Pant Carw this Saturday (2.30pm).

The Conwy Valley side maintained their perfect home record last weekend with a relatively comfortable 31-17 victory over long-time rivals Caernarfon.

The Cofis scored first when Kelvin Morris failed with a penalty attempt, but the ball bounced back into the field of play and was gladly gathered by Mac Jones who pounced for a try. Morris duly converted.

Nant’s Sion Pringle responded when he danced his way through three missed tackles to touch down in the corner.

After 18 minutes, young Nant scrum-half Cai Jones broke and gave a reverse pass for captain Carwyn Ellis to add to his collection of tries. Delwyn Jones added the extras.

Morris reduced the arrears to 12-10 after 27 minutes when he slotted a penalty.

Home tight-head prop Robin Glyn shoved his opponents aside to touch down by the posts and Jones’s boot extended the lead by a further two points.

From the restart, the crowd saw the move of the match.

Cai Jones and the two centres mesmerised the visiting defence with a series of short passes at appropriate angles – a move that ended with Aeron Jones grounding under the posts. An easy conversion for Delwyn Jones made it 26-10 at half time.

Nant’s fifth try arrived 13 minutes into the second period when another effective ruck by the scoring line saw Ellis pick the ball up from the base and pass to the blind side for hooker Eryl Jones to cross in the right corner for an unconverted score. Caernarfon scored a late consolation try. Youth: Caernarfon 10 Nant Conwy 22.
