Former police chief rebailed over child abuse allegations

-

AN ex-police chief who was arrested on suspicion of sexually abusing care home boys as young as eight has been re-bailed.

Retired North Wales superintendent Gordon Anglesea, 77, was questioned in December 2013 over allegations seven children were assaulted between 1975 and 1983.

He was arrested and bailed in January 2014 by officers from Operation Pallial, a National Crime Agency (NCA) investigation into claims of historic sexual abuse in the North Wales care home system.

Mr Anglesea, of Old Colwyn, was a policeman for 34 years and worked as an inspector in Wrexham between 1975 to 1983.

He became a superintendent and retired in 1991.

A spokesman for the NCA said: “A 77-yearold man from Old Colwyn, North Wales, answered his bail last Thursday.

“He was further interviewed by officers from Operation Pallial and re-bailed until May 27. Enquiries are ongoing.”

A total of 35 people — 31 men and four women — have now been arrested or interviewed under caution by NCA officers.

Of those, 15 have been charged, 18 are on bail and two have been released without charge.

A total of 14 people are due to stand trial in 2015 for one or more offences, across a number of trials.

Work to identify further potential suspects and to update all victims is continuing, the NCA confirmed.
