Council to revisit role in Colwyn Bay pier saga

-

A SPECIAL council meeting has been called to revisit a council’s involvement in a longrunning dispute.

Conwy County Council will hold a special meeting on June 30 after five councillors requested it reviews financial and legal implications of Colwyn Bay’s pier saga.

Councillor Cheryl Carlisle was asked as scrutiny chair opposition leader to request the meeting by Cllr Abdul Khan.

Cllrs Bob Squire, Keith Eeles and Sue Shotter also backed the move.

“We need to know where we are financially and legally,” said Cllr Carlisle. “I understand everyone is trying to do their best but we owe it to the taxpayers to fully look

Colwyn Bay Pier at this again.”

The Heritage Lottery bid by Colwyn Victoria Pier Trust was rejected last month.

The council has pushed ahead with plans to demolish the Grade II listed structure, a decision now referred to the Welsh Government and Cadw.

Meanwhile former owner Steve Hunt continues in a legal bid to prove the council does not own the Victorian boardwalk - a process said to be costing the council hundreds of thousands of pounds in legal fees.

Cllr Carlisle said: “The main thing is what happens if Cadw and the Welsh Government refuse the demolition?”

The meeting is at Bodlondeb at 6pm, Tuesday June 30.
