The sound of Johnny Cash at tribute show

- BY ERYL CRUMP

THE sound and essence of Johnny Cash will be recreated in Llandudno later this week as award-winning singer songwriter Clive John brings The Johnny Cash Roadshow to Venue Cymru.

The show also features Jill Schoonjans as June Carter, Amanda Stone and Louise Masters as the Carter Sisters along with the JC Horns.

The show takes the audience from the 1950’s right up to 2002 and all the stops in between. All the greatest hits will be included, along with songs from the latest album Out Among The Stars and - all aspects of Cash’s life are covered.

The show has had an endorsement from the Cash family themselves, with Rosanne Cash, first daughter of Johnny Cash saying: “Clive’s resemblance is uncanny”, and Cash’s Granddaughter Caitlin Crowell saying the show is “Absolutely authentic, to the point where it felt as if it wasn’t a tribute”.

Clive has suffered from a stammer all his life since severely burning his hands on an electric fire at the age of two.

After years in hospital having skin grafts the surgeon recommended to his parents that Clive learn to play a musical instrument (piano) to keep his fingers supple. Clive then progressed on to guitar as well as piano.

“I‘ve always prided myself on being true to yourself and have always written my own material. Never thought in a million years I’d be a tribute artist - yet here I am.....why?.....

“Ten years ago I lost my best friend to cancer of the brain. Before he died he spent three years travelling with me on the road to almost every gig and was my right hand man/roadie and soul mate. Shortly before he became sick he gave me a double album of Johnny Cash’s greatest hits.

“I instantly loved the sound (not knowing much about the country legend before) and he (Chris) knew I would cover his songs with respect and do it well. I thought it would be another ‘recommendation’ of songs that people want to hear.”

You can see Clive in action as part of The Johnny Cash Roadshow, the show is at Venue Cymru this Friday, June 19.
