Tributes to devoted dad-of-4 killed in cycle race FAMILY’S ANGUISH OVER ‘INSPIRATIONAL’ 44-YR-OLD

- BY MARI JONES

TRIBUTES have been paid to a “devoted dad” of four who died during a cycling race. Former Ysgol John Bright, Llandudno, pupil Jason Catley was killed after a collision in the sprint finish of the road race at Belvoir Castle, Grantham.

The 44-year-old civil engineer lived with his wife Sarah, who he met as a student at university, and children Millie, Charlie, Noah and Joel.

Sarah said: “Jason was a truly inspirational man, his glass was always half full and more, and his vibrancy, humour and enthusiasm for life was unstoppable.

“He was also a brilliantly cool and devoted dad to his four children and a loving husband.”

Jason, who lived in Nottinghamshire, grew up in Deganwy and his parents, Glyn and Margaret Catley, live in the West End of Colwyn Bay.

Sadly, his death is the second tragedy to befall the Catley family after Jason’s elder brother Greg died of a heart attack in 2001 when he was just 33 while he was rugby training.

Over the years Jason raised tens of thousands of pounds for the British Heart Foundation in memory of his brother. Jason’s sister Angela, who also attended Ysgol John Bright, said: “We are all devastated as a family. There are no words to describe how we are feeling, we never got over the death of my other brother, Greg.

“Jason was a proud dad, but also just a really top bloke. He was an incredibly vibrant person and unbelievably energetic.

“He did so many rides for the British Heart Foundation, including complet- ing Lands End to John O’Groats in just 50 hours. On that ride he managed to regain the two hours the team had lost. Apparently Jason just put his navigation system on his bike and rode through the night with the team in the van behind him – his fellow cyclists couldn’t believe his sheer determination.

“We will miss him so much, our only comfort is that he died doing something that he loved.”

One of Jason’s oldest friends Tim Bilton, from Glanwydden, near Landudno, said: “Jason lived life at 100mph always, he was the most energetic person I’ve ever known.

“He’d think nothing of ringing up on a Friday and asking if I wanted to go and watch a cycle race in the Alps, and off we’d go driving 2,000 in a weekend – he was just like that. He was always up for a prank, and a really fun dad who adored his family.”

An inquest has been opened into Jason’s death last Saturday.
