Club of the week THIS WEEK: GOG TRIATHLON CLUB

-

WHEN was GOG Triathlon formed and who by?

GOG Triathlon Club was formed in November 2014. Simon Roxburgh is the founder, and he wanted to build a triathlon community within the Llandudno area. We already have 90 members and there is a vibrant buzz amongst club members. WHERE do you meet and train?

We have three core sessions; Monday interval run session where we meet at Llandudno swimming pool at 7.20pm and run along the promenade.

The second is strength and conditioning on a Wednesday on the beach at 6.30am and the third is the swim session on a Sunday at Llandudno swimming pool at 8am.

All sessions are coached. WHAT level of fitness do you need to be at to join?

All abilities and levels of fitness are welcome, but the ability to swim 100m is necessary to come to the swim session. DO you have a junior section?

We are a senior club from 16+ but we are linked to a junior club called Conwy Tristars. We work closely with the club and their members feed into our club. In return we have helped coach and some of our coaches regularly help out. WHAT events does the club take part in?

We have great camaraderie with many members competing in local triathlons.

We also have members competing in races worldwide, with race distances up to Ironman (3.8k swim/ 180k bike/ 42k run).

Many in the club also compete in duathlons (run/bike/run), aquathons (swim/run), open water swim events, cycle road races, time trials and sportives and also running events from 5km fun runs to marathons.

We’re a registered club with Parkrun too. WHEN is your next event?

Our next event is this Sunday, the Llandudno Sea Triathlon which is our club championships and should see over 40 GOG members taking part. The first wave is off at 12.

The swim is in the sea by the pier, and the transition area is on the prom near the bandstand. The bike course goes around the Orme, and the run is along the prom toward the little Orme, finishing back at the transition area.

Sprint distances are 750m swim, 19km bike and 5km run.

Standard distance are 1500m swim, 36km bike and 10km run.

If anyone wants to come along and support us that would be great.

Then the next event is the Porth Eirias Open Water Swim Series. A new summer series of Open Water swim races. The next round is Friday, July 24, with a 5pm start. Entry is in online and in advance. DOES the group hold social events too?

Yes, we have a great social side which we combine with training.

After sessions such as a lake swim, we often gather to have a BBQ or a few drinks.

On top of that, we have regular club meetings, with the emphasis on socialising and enjoyment. CAN people come to a training session first prior to membership?

Yes, we love it when people come to join us and check out what the clubs about. We hope they’ll enjoy our sessions and the sense of community that comes from training with some great people. WANT to know more?
