Trouble with NOISE

Residents kept awake at night by resurfacing roadworks

- BY DAVID POWELL

BLEARY-EYED residents face noisy roadworks lasting until about 5am as two weeks of resurfacing gets underway in Llandudno Junction.

One frustrated resident even slept on his bathroom floor on Tuesday to get as far away as possible from the machinery.

Conwy County Borough Council said the work on the A547 Conway Road was timed during the night to “minimise disruption”.

A 23-year-old resident of Conway Road said his sleep was disrupted until 5am.

He said: “I expected the noise to finish at 11pm and then midnight, but if anything it got louder. It was disgraceful.

“The workmen were moving up and down the road. With the warm weather, I had to choose between sweating in bed or opening the window and it being even noisier.”

In desperation, he slept on his bathroom floor because it was the furthest room from the JCB and other resurfacing equipment.

Robert Quinn, another Conway Road resident who is in his 30s, said: “The house was shaking as the lorries passed continuously backwards and forwards all night.

“Later they were drilling outside my housemate’s window. They made an horrendous noise.

“I got to sleep at 1.30am because I’m a heavy sleeper but you couldn’t open your window.”

Objectors took to Twitter to vent their frustration.

Milverton House tweeted: “Encourage tourism in llandudno wake everyone up at 6am digging the road up #notfunny”

Gavin Lewis tweeted: “Scenes from Conwy Road last night. 7pm7am road resurfacing. The noise is a nightmare!”

But Llandudno Junction resident John Lynton, 57, could see both sides.

He said the racket was unavoidable and will lead to a better road surface for drivers and shoppers. He said: “The noise was inconvenient but you have to take it on the chin.”

Conwy County Borough Council defended the timing of the work by Lafarge Tarmac Contractors.

A spokeswoman said: “Unfortunately, there is no ideal time to do this essential work at such a busy location.

“The resurfacing is being carried out in two phases, with work taking place overnight in an effort to minimise the disruption.

“The work is scheduled to be completed in two weeks. We’re very sorry for any inconvenience caused.” Drivers are asked not to park their vehicles in the road between 7.00pm and 07.00am each night.

The work will take place in two phases. Phase 1 is from the junction with Penrhos Avenue to the roundabout near W R Davies Car Sales from June 29 until July 5.

Phase 2 is from the roundabout near W R Davies Car Sales to the junction with Richard Williams Builders Merchant from July 6 to July 12.
