THIS WEEK: US GIRLS ROCKS FESTIVAL

-

WHAT is Us Girls Rocks?

Us Girls is a new project which launches in Conwy county this weekend.

Following the Wales Active Adults survey in 2012, the results clearly showed a significant gender inequality between male and female participation levels in sport and physical activity.

The US Girls project aims to close this gap and increase physical activity participation in women and girls, particularly in disadvantaged areas.

We are looking to launch a program of activities for women and girls in the Kinmel Bay area following the launch. The program will promote the current provision in the area as well as new sessions.

We aim to provide fun, free, new and exciting opportunities to girls in a female-friendly setting that raises awareness of different activities that they can be involved in. The planned taster sessions can give girls ideas of what activities they would enjoy doing in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. WHEN and where does it launch?

The first ‘Us Girls Rocks’ Festival in Conwy will take place this Saturday, September 19, at Morfa Leisure Centre, Kinmel Bay.

We have booked the Morfa Leisure Centre (indoors and outdoors) for the day and aim to offer a day full of opportunities for women and girls to take part – FREE of charge!

Indoors we plan to have 30-minute taster sessions for the girls to try with outdoors offering activities, music, competitions, information stalls, refreshments etc. Girls can drop in for any amount of time between 11am and 4pm. A lanyard with all the information and a timetable of activities will be given at registration. WHO has organised the event?

Sarah Roberts – physical literacy coordinator in the community, Gemma Davis – Communities First healthier communities officer, KeviRoberts and Heather Robertshaw – BGC (Boys and Girls Clubs of Wales) Get Skilled project officers. WHAT will be on offer on the day?

A huge range of activities, ranging from badminton, netball, spinning and football, to hoola fit, Swedish longball, legs bums and tums and kettlebells. In total, over 15 different taster sessions to try, together with incentives and rewards for taking part.

The first 50 to register on the day will receive a free T-Shirt, and once the girls have completed five activities they will receive a free goodie bag.

There will also be live music from Retro Youth, a smoothie bar, a selfie booth, and a disco dome. So there’s plenty on offer if they fancy a break from the sporting activities. And best of all, it’s all free. WHAT ages can attend and do you have to live in Kinmel Bay?

The Us Girls event activities are aimed at women and girls aged 11+, however there will be a small range of activities available for under-11s, to help if there are mums who would like to come along but can only do so if they bring their child. We would love to see as many girls as possible from across North Wales at the event, we would certainly not turn anybody away based on where they live. DO you have to register beforehand?

No, you can register on the day. WHAT level of fitness is needed?

No level of fitness required. All the activities are tasters that can be done at the individual’s own pace. We want the girls to have fun and enjoy getting active without the pressure of feeling like you’re at the gym. ANY more events lined up?

US Girls is a Conwy-wide project. We chose to launch the initial activities in Kinmel Bay but plan to replicate this event and activities in other areas next year. WANT to know more?
