SPJ produces extraordinary runs

-

STEVE JONES, better known to his friends as SPJ, is 61 in November, but has recently achieved some extraordinary results on the national and international mountain racing stage.

A resident of Eglwysbach and owner of Xray Minerals, a firm in Colwyn Bay, Jones has been a member of Eryri Harriers for many years.

Recently he won the Veteran-60 category at the British Fellrunning Championships.

This was an amazing achievement against truly quality competi- tion from all corners of the UK, and particularly against the very best of mountain runners from the north of England.

The British Championships are competed over four races in each of the home countries.

Jones managed to win in three, meaning he did not even have to compete in the final race in Northern Ireland.

It is testament to Jones’s strength and speed, that despite his mature years, very few of his Eryri clubmates under the age of 40 can get anywhere near him in the race, and in fact on current form only the fastest runners in the club can beat him.

Not satisfied with his British Champs win, Jones recently finished second over-60 in the World Masters Mountain Racing Championship. The event was hosted at Betws-y-Coed as part of the World Mountain Racing Championships program.

Jones finished only 26 seconds behind the victor and was part of the gold-winning British team.
