Darren lifts the Morgan trophy

DARREN WILLIAMS lifted the prestigiou­s Don Morgan Trophy for the third time in his career after defeating Lewis Scott in a nail-biting final.

Williams battled his way to a 21-18 victory over the St Asaph star in last weekend’s showpiece.

The 17th annual Don Morgan Trophy competitio­n, sponsored by The Co-operative Funeralcar­e, was once again hosted by Craig-y-Don Bowling Club last Sunday.

On perfect sunny day for bowling, a record entry of 40 players from both Wales and England competed for a prize fund of £1,050, produced outstandin­g entertainm­ent for spectators on a green prepared in excellent condition.

Williams, a regular competitor at this event and one of Wales’ finest players, came through five hardfought matches, performing extremely well all day before pipping the highlyrate­d Scott in the final.

The Trophy, plus the £350 first prize, was presented by Craig-y-Don BC president Gareth E Hughes on behalf of the sponsors.

Tournament organiser Roger Morgan, on behalf of his family, thanked Craig-y-Don BC, the bowlers and spectators for supporting this event held each year in memory of his father.

Raffles and donations raised over £200 for the local Marie Curie Nursing charity. Results: Quarterfin­als: D Jones (Llanrwst) 21 P Dooley ( Ma c c l e s - field) 13; L Scott (St Asaph) 21 J Jones (Rhyl) 19; D Baskervill­e (Altrincham) 21 C Charlton ( Holywell) 17; D Williams (Conwy) 21 G W Hughes (Colwyn Bay) 14.

Semi-finals: L Scott 21 D Jones 19; D Williams 21 D Baskervill­e 18. Final: D Williams 21 L Scott 18. High break prize: S Parry (St Asaph) 13.

The prize for the Best Lady award was generously donated by Jane Bowler to the best junior Harry Lawton (Conwy).

Craig-y-Don and The Oval bowling clubs’ ladies’ teams challenge each other annually for the Sir Henry Fildes Cup. This year it was Craig-y-Don’s turn to host the match which is always a very enjoyable afternoon of bowling.

There were some very good matches but, at the end of the afternoon it was Craig-y-Don Ladies who triumphed 7-3.

Margaret Snow, Oval Ladies’ captain (last year’s winners) presented the Fildes Cup to Craig-y-Don captain, Nina Garlinge.

Next year’s match will be held at The Oval.
