Wilson is unlucky loser in Worlds

-

LLANDUDNO ABC boxer John Paul Wilson was an unlucky first round loser in the World Junior Championships in Russia.

Wilson, 15, boxed Songsaeng Phoyaem from Thailand in his opening bout in St Petersburg.

Llandudno ABC coach Lee Hogan said: “Mike (Hogan) and I travelled out on the Tuesday, but John Paul had boxed a few hours before we arrived.

“From the video and speaking to the national coaches, he was very unlucky to lose. He followed all instructions perfectly and boxed better than ever. The corner really thought they were winning every round, but he lost the bout on a unanimous decision.”

Wales picked up one bronze medal, having been represented by three boxers.

Hogan added: “It was a fantastic experience for John Paul and we’re really looking forward to a great season ahead.

“The World Championships came on the back of a very successful season in which John Paul won the GB Championship, just missed out on a medal in the European Championships in the Ukraine, and won a gold medal in a tournament in Latvia.”

Llandudno ABC will host its home show in Venue Cymru on October 24.

It is a dinner show and for £30 spectators can enjoy a two-course meal and a fantastic night of boxing.

Tables of ten are selling for £300 and the club is looking for sponsors. Contact lee.m.hogan@gmail.com for more details.
