SEVEN Conwy county players competed in the Great Orme Junior Open and came away with five gold and three silver medals.

Abi Cottrill (Great Orme) won three gold and two silver, Freya Cottrill (Great Orme) claimed two gold and David Wedge (Stella Maris) landed one silver medal.

The U-13 girls singles was won by 10-year-old Freya Cottrill, who beat Jasmine Owen (Pembrokeshire) in the final.

Both girls also played in the U-13 boys’ singles where Freya scored 68 out of a possible 90 points.

The pair then played together to take the U-13 girls’ doubles.

Suhas Shekar (Great Orme) was third in his singles group and then partnered Christian Adams (Cheshire) to finish up third in the boys doubles.

Daniel McLaughlin (Vardre) was fourth in his singles group.

Abi Cottrill (Great Orme) won the first of her three titles when she topped the U-15 girls singles.

She then joined up with Smruthya Ganeshram (North East Wales) to win the U-15 girls doubles.

Abi initially missed out on a hat-trick of gold titles when with Alexander Tosney (Sussex) they lost the final in three games to Welsh international player Michael Pritchard and Lili Thomas (both NE Wales).

David Wedge reached the quarter-finals of the U-15 boys singles where he lost to Amogh Patil (NE Wales).

Wedge then teamed up with Shamanth Moodalbyle (NE Wales) and was the runner-up in the boys doubles.

Abi Cottrill (Great Orme) came back to win the U-17 girls singles, beating last year’s winner Ellie Roberts (Northumberland) in the final.

Abi then paired up with Lili Thomas (NE Wales) but lost a three-set final to Ellie Roberts and Reya Patil (NE Wales).

That made it a golden treble and two silvers for the highly talented Cottrill.

She again played with Alexander Tosney , but lost out in the semifinal, once more in a three-set match.

The next event for the Conwy youngsters is the North Wales Shuttle Tournament.
