Railwaymen target Welsh Cup upset

-

LLANDUDNO Junction travel to Caersws for a Welsh Cup first round clash this weekend no doubt boosted by last Saturday’s 2-0 win at Llanfairpwll which kept them second in Welsh Alliance Division One.

While the Railwaymen are flying high in their league, ‘Sws are struggling near the bottom of the next level up Huws Gray Alliance, so Junction must have a reasonable chance of causing an upset at the Powys ground.

Returning Bryan Roberts from Conwy Borough made his season’s debut at Llanfairpwll and was instantly involved in the first attack which resulted in Ricky Jones seeing his effort go over the bar.

On 15 minutes the deadlock was broken when James Hobson latched onto a loose ball outside the area and fired a rocket into the bottom corner.

The visitors had chances in increase the lead with Chris Quinn scooping over the advancing keeper, but the ball ran wide of the post.

‘Pwll had a good chance to level just on 40 minutes when Dylan Williams struck on effort from range which was tipped over the bar by Gwydion Owen.

Early in the second half Quinn was on the end of a poor challenge from Pwll’s Johnny Roberts. Before the referee dealt with the matter Quinn had reacted with a kick-out which then resulted in both players seeing a straight red card.

Kieran Davies was introduced to the Junction midfield and he made an instant impact as he shook off his marker in the box and finished to make it 2-0 on 68 minutes.

Llanfair failed to trouble the solid back line of Junction and with five minutes to go the lead was almost 3-0 when Hobson spotted the keeper off his line and tried an effort from almost 40 yards out which bounced just wide at the last moment.

Junction joint-manager Martyn Jones said: “We weren’t at our best again but I don’t feel the result was ever in much doubt.

“We are pleased with our first league clean sheet of the season and look to carry that forward into the tough test at Caersws.”
