Play school! Pupils get hobbit home

£50,000 SCHEME AT SCHOOL INCLUDES MUD KITCHEN

PUPILS at a Bulwell primary school have been treated to a new £50,000 outdoor play area.

Springfiel­d Academy, in Lawton Drive, now has the state-of-the-art area for its youngest children.

The area has been kitted out with a hobbit house, water exploratio­n area, mud kitchen and a reading throne.

Children can also enjoy a new sandpit, climbing wall, balance beams, ropes and a slide.

The grand opening was attended by children of the school, pupild, governors and school staff on Thursday.

Head teacher JB Francis said: “We are thrilled with our amazing new play area, which is enabling pupils to develop and learn in an exciting outdoor environmen­t.

“It has been very well received by the children, parents and staff and we would like to thank Djanogly Learning Trust for their support.”

Children at the school were delighted with the playground and celebrated its opening with an afternoon of carnival activities, face painting and ice cream. Lily-rose Newton, aged four, said: “Everything was great about our carnival.

“I liked the game with the cans and the slide.”

Aiva Atkinson, also four, said: “I loved the face painting and my favourite part of the toys is the hobbit house.”

Parent Kim Hobbs said: “It gives the children more to do.

“Taylor looks forward to coming to school.”

Mum Sarah Swales added: “Blaine loves the slide and it means he’s more active.”

Springfiel­d Academy has 209 pupils. The £50,000 play area was co-funded by the school and Djanogly Learning Trust.

Liz Anderson, chief executive of the trust, added: “It’s fantastic to see the opening of these exciting new facilities that have transforme­d the play area at Springfiel­d Academy. This project reflects our wider creative approach to teaching and learning so that all children have the best possible opportunit­y to thrive and succeed as part of our commitment to excellence.”

The trust sponsors a number of primary academies across Nottingham.
