It’s a real house of horrors

BUSINESSMAN CONVERTS FLAT INTO TERRIFYING ‘NIGHTMARE ASYLUM’ ATTRACTION

- By JON PRITCHARD

HORROR movie fan Thomas Kolodzeij knew exactly what he was going to do when he took over his latest property in St Ann’s - turn it into the scariest house in the city.

The 25-year-old, who runs serviced apartments in Nottingham, said he had made plans in his head to turn the flat and adjoining unit into a horror house business within five minutes of seeing the property.

The “Nightmare Asylum” attraction, in St Ann’s Wells Road, has been given rave reviews from horror fans from across the country - but other haven’t enjoyed it as much.

“One group of four locked themselves in a tiny room 1m by 1m and stayed there until the actors had gone and it was time to come out,” said Mr Kolodzeij, of Gamston.

“There have been some funny situations since we opened it but we have had good reviews on Facebook and Tripadvisor.

“It’s mostly been horror fans who have come to do it. We’ve had people from Essex and even further.”

He said his latest venture is a mix between the ‘horror house’ attractions seen in America and on mainland Europe, and the more popular escape rooms, where clues are given to escape from a locked room.

“I have been to horror houses in Poland and Ukraine but I don’t think they are as scary as mine,” he added.

“That’s just my opinion. It takes a lot to scare me and although I enjoyed them, I wasn’t really that scared. I don’t want to give too much away. We have some actors who work here but I won’t say how many.

“It lasts about an hour, but I the average time people have lasted is about 30 minutes so far.”

It took Mr Kolodzeij two to three months to convert the property.

“Within five minutes I knew what I wanted to do,” he said. “There was a flat and a unit next to it so I knocked a hole in the wall to join them. We opened at the end of April and we’ve had 70 or 80 groups come so far.”

Mr Kolodzeij added: “I like the older style horror films like The Omen. Clowns don’t bother me at all but because of the American films people are scared of them. I don’t get it.

“But people who enjoy horror films will like the horror house.”

Entry to Nightmare Asylum ranges from £50 for two people to £115 for groups of six. For more information, call 0115 850 0428.
