Hero cops in TV focus

-

A DOCUMENTARY is set to be aired this week telling the story of how two off-duty police officers foiled a gang of gun-toting would be jewellery robbers.

Sgt Iain Mcivor and Sgt David Wilson were in Newark when they heard a commotion and went to investigate.

Seconds later they were staring down the barrel of a shotgun as the robber pumped the barrel and shouted “get back or I’ll shoot”.

The four people in the gang, who were also armed with a lump hammer, rushed out of Andrew Michael’s Jewellers in Newark with around £250,000 of watches and jewellery.

Eleven people were eventually jailed for a total of more than 90 years after admitting being involved in the robbery.

The brave duo collected a bravery award for their actions and were named as Region 4 (Eastern) winners at the 22nd National Police Bravery Awards.

Sgt Wilson, who has now returned to work for Nottinghamshire Police, said: “I feel so privileged to have won the award and proud of what happened on the night.

“The best thing is coming to work every day and you just don’t know what you are going to be faced with. It’s the unpredictable nature of policing, that no day is the same.

“I love to help people. Anyone that works within the police, the emergency services and the armed forces, that put that uniform on and put ourselves in harm’s way each day, I have real respect for.

“Day in day out, everyone is doing what they need to do to help people. As harrowing as it is to watch it back, I would do it again it’s what the police do,” added Sergeant Mcivor.

The robbers eventually appeared in Nottingham Crown Court on Wednesday, April 26, 2017, and they were all sentenced. The gang included people from Coventry, Birmingham, Boston and London who were jailed for terms ranging from 15 years six months to 10 months.

The documentary is set to be shown on ITV on Friday (July 6).
