We salute those who serve

-

THOSE who serve in the Armed Forces have always held a special place in the hearts of the British people.

This is naturally brought into its sharpest focus during times of conflict when those men and women are asked to lay their lives on the line for their country.

And, of course, while hopefully the mass destruction of global conflicts is consigned to history, there always exist places of extreme danger in which our service personnel operate.

But even in these multimedia days of almost instant access to news of operations in the far-flung corners of the world it is all too easy to take for granted the dedication of those who choose to serve in such a way.

Other countries choose to flaunt their military might with massed choreographed parades of men and machinery as a statement of strength to the watching world.

But this weekend witnessed a far more British way of saluting our heroes.

In market towns and cities across the country, parades celebrated British Armed Forces Day.

Local people turned out to cheer and wave flags as troops linked to their area marched before their colours with bands playing.

Meanwhile, others gathered at Chilwell to mark the centenary of the munitions factory blast which claimed 134 civilian lives during the First World War.

It is a stark reminder of how it is not just those on the frontline who are the victims of conflict.

It is right that we make the effort to commemorate all those who have given and, sadly, continue to give their lives.

But equally we should not be afraid to continue to take pride in and show our appreciation for all those who purpose is to protect their country and make the world a safer place for us all.

Long may we celebrate Armed Forces Day.
