It’s time to stay strong and back Britain

-

OH how cynical you are RL Cooper (Opinions 26th June). I remember a Britain buzzing with pride in the 1960s.

We were still recovering from the hardships of WW2 where we had been on our last legs but had pulled through with the help of our Empire and Dominion Countries (from which grew the Comonwealth) and during the war the Americans, to whom we had to repay massive war debts.

France and Germany took Winston Churchill’s idea of a Common Market, (just that - a trading partnership, not an all encompassing government as it has become) and with just six member countries.

We were forced to turn our backs on our Commonwealth trading partners with very few exceptions stating hardship if we took our market away.

In 1975 we were still in this Common Market with no indication the monster would grow demanding more finances from us and to give governance of our laws to its beaurocrats, none of whom have been elected.

Remember the arguments Margaret Thatcher had to try and get us a fairer deal? Remember David Cameron trying for small concessions early in 2016 that met the same answer - Non!

So why was anyone surprised when the referendum returned the Leave vote? If they had given those small concessions, the vote may have gone the other way, but they didn’t and we didn’t! WE CHOSE TO LEAVE. If we remain strong and don’t cave in, as all bullies they will back off and give us a good deal. It is in their interest as well as ours that they do that, but if we waiver they will continue to walk all over us.

It is TOO LATE to stop Brexit proceeding now.

But at least we do have our free vote, we can speak freely to our MP for help in many matters and the majority of voters VOTED TO LEAVE. So back our Government to do the best they can as we asked and BACK BRITAIN. Margaret Middleton Old Epperstone Rd Lowdham
