WEDDING BANNERS... Can these couples convince their families to accept their marriage partners?

-

THE path of true love never did run smooth, a saying that is particularly relevant for the couples in this troubling documentary series about ‘forbidden’ relationships.

Just like star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet, whose warring families kept them apart, the couples here are desperate for their families’ blessings. The series so far has been fascinating, emotional and occasionally shocking.

PICK OF THE DAY

One Mauritian mother, whose daughter is engaged to a white man, said: “I don’t mean to be racist, but obviously he’s white. You know, we’re Asian. It’s simply not acceptable.”

Elsewhere, a gay man’s parents refused to accept their son’s plans to marry a man. His father spoke of his “horror” when his son came out.

In this series finale, we follow 20-year-old Shane, who is planning to propose to his 37-year-old girlfriend Elaine.

Elaine’s family are opposed to the relationship due to the 17-year age gap but the couple throw an engagement party in the hope of winning over the doubters.

Meanwhile, Junior plans to convert to Islam in order to marry his Muslim girlfriend Sobiah. Raised in a devout Christian family, Junior is desperate to get his dad’s blessing before the conversion, so the wedding plans are on hold until they get his verdict.

Elsewhere, it is the day of 20-year-old Chloe and 21-yearold Jack’s wedding, despite accusations they are too young.

Determined that everyone will be behind them, Chloe has finally got her mum on board.

But will old tensions resurface on the big day?
