‘Zombie knife victim said ow after alleged street attack’

WITNESS SAYS THREE JUMPED OUT

-

A TEENAGER walking with a 17-yearold stabbed with a zombie knife heard him say “ow” after three people “jumped out”.

The witness, 18, told Nottingham Crown Court they “just surprised us”.

He could not see what anyone looked like, he told a jury at the trial of Dejarn Mcleod, 18, of Weave Close, Basford, who is accused of having the zombie knife.

Mcleod pleads not guilty to this offence and wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm in Dentdale Drive, off Wollaton Vale, on February 12.

Shortly after 4pm, the victim was rushed to hospital by ambulance with a severe stab wound to his left leg.

The large knife was removed from the teenager’s limb in surgery.

Recalling what had happened, the witness said “I heard him go ‘ow.’

“I took a step back,” he explained. “I just looked forward”.

He described there being others there in gloves, balaclavas and black clothing.

Prosecutor James Mclernon asked him: “Did you understand why he’d said ‘ow’?”

The witness replied: “No”.

He ran off because “they looked quite intimidating” and “well, I just couldn’t tell who they was.”

Asked by Mr Mclernon if they were holding anything, he replied: “I got a glimpse of a light which could have reflected or something which could have been a knife.”

Christopher Johnston, representing Mcleod, said: “They were in your sight for a second, at the very best two seconds?”

The witness replied: “Yes”. Jurors have watched CCTV of three males, one allegedly the accused in light-coloured trousers, appearing to crouch behind a fence, then jump out and attack the victim.

A woman on the school run saw people crouching behind a fence, one with a silver object she feared was a knife.

She beeped her horn to alert them. “I saw a long silver thing reflecting in my mirror,” she told the jury. “I just knew it was a set up.

“I beeped my horn and saw somebody drop.”

In her police statement she said there were two or three people at the fence in black clothing, although she did not see their faces.

She swung her car into a nearby community centre car park.

An ambulance was called to the scene.

The boy, who was stabbed, later told her he thought she was “saying hello” after she beeped her horn.
